Notes About The Poem

Strasbourg in World War II was occupied by Nazi Germany, experiencing forced annexation, evacuations, and intense nazification before being liberated by the French 2nd Armored Division under General Leclerc on November 23, 1944. The city was later defended against a major German counter-offensive, Operation Nordwind, in early 1945. [1, 2, 3, 4] Wikipedia

This poem relates to our experience, just getting off the train! Crazy!

Short Course in History

Catercorner cuts the unleashed verbal assault in Strasbourg, France.
Perpetrator’s German Shepherd ready to rumble on the square.
Passersby, with prickles in present tense, quickly crosses past.

This ending is perfect. Such things make me uncomfortable, too.

48 years ago, I was very, very close with a couple in Israel, the wife of whom was from Strasbourg. Her stories of Nazi persecution were bone-chilling. Small world...
