She Is Five Mom Apologizes

She thought she recognized her friend She was excited and happy She began screaming Hi Nancy across the grocery store line Her mother was horrified She is five, she apologized to strangers Having no idea what had inspired this When they got to the check-out girl She said “Hi Angela” to the child. The child was satisfied for this was Nancy. The mother asked Nancy how she knew her child. They were eight hours away from home after all. Nancy used to work at Angela’s day care center.

It happened sooner than later. At age 12 Angela had me pull up to junior high and slunk out of the car on a crawl so no one would see us together. I would not pull away until I heard the car door snap shut remembering being 12 myself.
