She Held Onto Hope

~ She held onto Hope ~

She held onto Hope as long as she could
Hugged and embraced it as a Lover should
Yet one dark night Hope wriggled away
Leaving her near Despair at the break of day

Frightened, she dressed and raced down the block
But she'd missed Hope by just a few ticks of the clock
Heading back home, her head on her chest
She fell into bed, though she could not rest

Awake and now frantic, she dialed up her horoscope
Connected to a recording, she'd reached the end of her rope
As she groped for some pills to commit suicide
A glimmer of Hope twinkled, to stem the dark tide

Her eyes alighted on a picture, taken at age five
The expression on her face so sweet, so alive
In that photo she embraced HOPE, as if for the very first time
And that's how this story ends ~ It's the very last line

I really enjoyed this one. I love the way it can be interrupted differently at the end. Very well written :-) x

Thank you so much for letting me know your view on the end of the poem. I wasn't sure that it would work when I posted it. Much appreciated, Elaine! Best wishes, Gershon

i like this one, to me it shines in its brilliance, the end lines could be taken either way... it could be the end of the story because she found hope, or the end of the story because she only briefly held the hope...it lets the reader draw the conclusions in their own minds... excellent penning my friend :) hugs

Always interesting to read that a narrative I wrote can be taken more than one way. That's a good sign, at least for me. Thanks so much for the feedback and the continued support, Sandra! Warm wishes, Gershon

"A glimmer of Hope twinkled, to stem the dark tide"--and the last line made me smile. :)

Hi Gershon, I enjoyed the message within this write. Although it seemed hope had abandoned her, hope showed just in the nick of time. Have a great weekend:-) Alexis

Thank you so much for your encouragement here. You might say that 'in the nick of time' is such a common narrative device that it should be dedicated to St. Nick! :) gw
