Shallow Love Is Like a Reverie

Shallow Love is Like a Reverie

Shallow love is bubblegum when the flavor burst begins.
Chew too long - the sweetness will be gone.
Shallow love doesn’t want to chew that same old piece of gum
on and on and on and on and on.

Shallow love is a Hollywood happy-ending movie.
It doesn’t delve into life’s grime and grit.
Shallow love hates sub-plots. When there are complications,
show’s over! Shallow love is done with it!

Like a reverie is shallow love - a dilly-dally dream,
a happy-ending movie, bubblegum sweet!
Shallow love can’t find the beauty in what comes with reality.
With love profound, shallow love cannot compete.

A lovely trance of pure romance is shallow love’s reverie.
But soon you realize that it is fake.
Though it’s divine to be lost in its dream, everybody knows. . .
from reveries you always must awake!

Forgive me, but, :) sometimes one walking away doesn't mean it was shallow, but rather just only one person was swimming in the deep end. :/ :) But, yeah, I get it. Just wanted to stress that little bit of angst I was having with it. :) <3

re-reading some of my comments, I guess many poets got the meaning. I get what you are saying too, Robert. It would suck to have a deep love that was not deep for the other person.

robert, I think nobody is getting this poem. I thought it was so clear that love based on pure desire that quickly sinks is much different from the true love that develops when two souls work hard at it to make it endure. Anyway, it did not place, so despite my hard work, I think it is a poem where my meaning was not understood.

Love the gum metaphor here; shallow love is rather empty; like the old piece of chewed gum that no longer has a flavor. Beautifully done.

actually marriage is the old gum (for me anyway) you just have to keep chewing on it and liking it. Those who fall in and out of love constantly are addicted to NEW gum and can't stick with anything once it gets old! haha

You defined it well Andrea: With love profound, shallow love cannot compete. Yet--people fall for it..they should heed your advice...from reveries you always must awake! All the best for a win at TOP.

This reminds me of the song Shallow, so many lovely verses, making a perfect poem of love and all its multi colored meetings.
