Shadows In the Valley

Isn't life hard
always standing on guard

I pay attention occasionally
to the things that pass by me
and sometimes I see how it is.

But mostly I coast.

If I win or I lose
it's my choice and
you cannot choose
the roads that I take.

Where the fear of rejection and
dissatisfaction outweigh the
compassion of strangers
is the where
where I don't want
to go.

So
I'll stand here on guard
until I'm relieved.
