Sentimental Journey

My parents were born in the USA as was I,
but about my heritage I have never been shy.
My grandfather came from a distant land,
one I've never seen, but still hold close at hand.

He took that "slow boat" from Europe in the first part of the last century,
Hoping for a better life for raising a family.
I often wonder what he felt when he came to see
in New York's harbor, the Statue of Liberty.

From New York he came to Chicago's community,
That's where all the Polish people migrated to, you see.
I don't know if his wedding was arranged or not,
but he must have been pleased with the gal he got.

They had ten children and were married so long,
50 Plus years together and then they were gone.
They were able to see many of their grandchildren grow so tall,
Like weeds in a garden, between Summer and Fall.

I am only one of many cousins who remain,
Catholic in religion, Polish in tradition and name.
The love of this family is left in my heart to dwell,
because I love them all, but try to hide it too well.

I love them all but never say it aloud,
it must be what keeps me safe in their crowd.
I'm writing this as our yearly reunion comes near
It is difficult to put into words, the love I feel there.

Smiles and laughter, our faithful friends remain near,
when we get together for this annual cheer.
I love each one of them in my own particular way,
wishing only that I could see more of them each day.

I've been married to a Wonder Woman for nearly 40 years,
We've been through the laughter, but also the tears.
She is not Polish in her origin,
Her Chinese parents lived in Minnesota...that's where she came in.

We have a son who is no longer a child,
he's no shrinking violet, not meek or mild.
I've watched him grow in wisdom and size,
more thoughtful I think, than I was wise.

Being closer to the end of the road makes me reflective you see,
of the life this family has brought to me.
The traditions of a Polish heritage and what they mean
are only overshadowed by that love I glean.

Call me "sentimental", I won't argue with you.
It's been a secret trait of mine in much that I do.
Life's loves has held a special spot for me,
As its ups and downs have made me see.

So, to my family I say "I Love You All"!
May the Lord's blessing be with you as well.
The life I have known with you has been one that is long,
but I know of no other family to which I would rather belong.

Thank you Glen. We too often forget that it is the family that brought us all the gifts we have in our lives. You may want to read my poem "A tree for life", which I wrote long ago. It is my testament to family. Thanks, again.

What a wonderful tribute to your parents and your Polish roots. My father was from Lithuania but I will never visit the country for very personal reasons since his death:-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks Jan. He was a character in many ways, but loved more each year he was with us. I'd only wished that he had more time to give me more history about my dad's early years.
