Selfish Beyond Belief

Looking through a full fridge And finding nothing worth my while Not giving a second thought To the skin and bone children Drinking from a swamp With great big smiles There's nothing good on TV, We eat at the same place everyday, And by the way I'm bored out of my mind! But a scared little boy sees it all Far away from the comfort of this hypnotic box He gave his share of scraps to his younger brother While his entertainment is watching God paint pictures in the sky (I racked my brain Searching for ways I should be upset Ain't one good reason I could find) It was yesterday I found myself and grimaced It was today I helped out a complete stranger And thought "How silly of me to think That was all there was to it... Nobody's ever just found, we run too frantically For all that nonsense. We do the best we can For as long as we can. Though selfish beyond belief I do think there is still hope for me" I smiled in awe at the discoveries Tomorrow would bring

Awwwhh, I remember reading this one, but it's surely worth reading again. Such a sweet reflection Timothy. You have a beautiful soul. One little action can make such a profound difference on someone. I can't imagine you selfish, but I understand your sentiments here. Always, Laura

Hey Laura: we all have our selfish moments, I think. And sometimes our opinions of ourselves are in the extremes: overly inflated, or too negative, etc., ... taking a step back from it all is good for the soul on occasion. Thanks for the re-read :)

We fail to think about selfishness until its put into perspective. Nice work!

How right you are! A good example of getting perspective is Jonathan Swifts book, Gulliver's Travels.

Yes, this is a good way to write on the topic of the general selfishness of many of us. I have to admit I worry too much about my own small problems when there are others living on the verge of just surviving. What a world it is!!

I figured this was something that most people could relate too. I'm glad it was received well. One of the most important (and hardest as well) things to learn is that there is somehow who always has it worst than you...

Good poem. I think of my problems, then think of others that have it worse than me, and then there are thouse that even have it worse. Unfortunately many times things have been easy for us and we forget that. My poem was about the song The Beautiful People, by Marilyn Manson, actually it was about him and I referenced the song. I don't know why I was thinking about that song. I have more anger about his remake of Sweet Dreams and don't find that funny lol, Thanks for your comment.
