Seated Together at James Earl Carter’s Funeral
God’s timing impeccable, bringing
together presidential adversaries, ringing
in the new year, giving us a chance
for revival. We hear about truthtelling stance.
We shall all pass into the great beyond;
Will these politicians find a way to bond,
Put aside their swords of tongue and lash,
so in heaven, no need for teeth to gnash?
Will these men and women embrace the Lord,
enter the pearly gates in one accord?
One could hope of such peace, if ears
would open, repeat the words of God, fears
tossed to the sea, aha moments to glean,
put away all impurities, dishonesty, and hold
to the greatest government above the clouds.
My shoulders shake, my eyes drip pearls. Crowd’s
mannerism, will they be shaken from unbelief
and hug one another, not just in grief
but truly love, dare I say love and other
in all the New Testament ways of sister and brother.
L.A. on fire, N.O. run over, evil restrained,
yes…restrained for in demonic force sustained,
we’d tear out the hairs of our heads, unless
we have the seal of God, like Passover impress
upon our heads, Christ’s blood upon our heart’s door.
A lighthouse beams - the sailor, Carter comes ashore.
Imperfectly, in our humanity, we enter God’s presence,
yet covered by His perfect sacrifice; His omnipresence
felt, but might each one regret past sins, fly
with the Holy Spirit, sanctified to begin again. I sigh
at the thought, for all mankind will bend both knees,
humbled; or ecstatic at His glory, for they aimed to please.
