School Day

Today is the beginning of a new term
Today is the awaited day after a long school break
Today new students would start in our school
Today some old students wouldn't be seen in the school
Today the teachers have the planner ready for the term

Today me and my sister will stay home
Mommy has no school fees and daddy has not been seen
Mommy has no job, even feeding us has become difficult 
Today I will wash dishes, sweep the house, fold laundry and bathe my little sister
Today like so many days to come, I may not have play time with sister.
But most importantly I'll miss school

Hannington Mumo May 16, 2015 at 12:35 AM A germane piece composed with a keen eye for the most destitute portions of the earth, where meeting the most basic needs invites a struggle. To many out there, the feeling that the poem is full of hyperbole is excused. However, to those in the know, the poem captures the melancholy themes of penury, negligence and abandonment, hope against hope, disillusionment,apathy on the part of some, helplessness on the part of the rest, etc,etc. A characteristically telling/revealing poem. 777+++!!!
