Scared Straight

Mine is a story
a thousand times told.
A young happy kid
who always knew
she walked a different path.
I was always afraid
to let the real me
shine free.
Scared to show the world
who I was.
I was a coward
hiding in my own shadow.
Frightened to lead
a life frowned upon
in a so called advanced society.
Anxious of being
attacked and rejected
by loved ones
and strangers alike.
So I walked the path
that was expected of me,
down the long aisle of life,
leading a life
not meant for me.
