The portion of the Bible (Old Testament / Pentateuch) read in synagogues this week is near the end of the Book of Leviticus.  It opens (Chapter 25, verse 1...) with an injunction that the Land of Israel observe a 'Sabbath' / 'Sabbatical Year' every seven years...

Every seven years The Land of Israel lies fallow God's glorious Name -- His Kingdom -- sanctified and hallowed

A beautiful thanksgiving to God in all his glory - makes me think of the Our father poem - Hallowed be Thy name, ..... Thy Will be done .... give us this day our daily bread ............ for thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory, for ever and ever, Amen - A heartfelt, faithful write dear friend. Loved it. Excellent faith teaching point, Gershon. Just as the birds neither reap nor sow, likewise must we rely solely on God to give us our daily bread. As it is written: The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof. Powerful poetry! Love and more love always.

Thank you so much for the appreciation of this one, FRJ. Thought it might have been a bit too 'straight-arrow-ish' to post on this site, but one should never be ashamed of praising G-d! Blessings, gw

Yes, it's true. Still observed today...Can you imagine a farmer not planting or reaping for an entire year, every seven years, and staying in business?! Hundreds of farmers in Israel do this! We Diaspora-niks do help support them with some serious cash, but it's still an incredible act of faith. Teaches us that the Land is G-d's; not ours... Many of these farmers spend all or most of each Sabbatical year in Yeshiva, learning Talmud and halakha. :) gw
