Sail
SAIL
In the attic dusty and dark and dry
The sail was in a confining box,
Never looked at, never used
Packed slack and crumpled,
In the stuffy atmosphere of the attic -
Buried for long years.
It has never known the real smell of the sea
And the strength of the real ocean wind
That will tighten the cloth,
Will wet it with salty drops of the sea.
Last week I took it out and
Fixed it to my boat
Now filled with real winds
And moving as it was
Always meant to move,
To the fullest extent,
Being allowed to assume
The beautiful shape
It was designed to have,
It catches all eyes
With its grace and beauty -
Powering movement and progress.
The sail is alive now
Anticipating something.
Like dolphins at her prow
It knows something is ahead
And strains to get there.
God’s breath pours energy in
The sail pours energy out
Directing the boat to the open sea
Now it billows and ripples with power -
A breast filled with hope.
The waves open at the boat’s bow,
Foam with her motion -
And her passionate rocking
Makes love endlessly to the waves.
