"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return" ~ from the song Nature Boy, written by George McGrew, aka eden ahbez, and recorded by Nat King Cole and others A child born, unloved, in the winter cold might like a river, from affection, run; but like brittle bones when they get old, when colder still, might freeze, shrink from the sun. Afraid that warmth might make him break and crack, this sad, and lonely fragile entity, may view love as a frightening attack, and a threat to his timid identity. To quote, "the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return".

Heartiest congratulations on your win in my contest with this wonderful poem, David. I enjoyed it. "Nature Boy" by Nat King Cole. Boy, what a song...and singer!

Thanks Edward! True! I think I became aware of the song watching Moulin Rouge a few years ago.

Oh wow... this is touching. It explores vividly how the lack of affection can rot one's soul. Your piece is very poignant, along with the analogy of comparing a cold and bitter feeling to a winter. The way you develop the MC, showing that they are now afraid of love is truly compelling; indeed, we shall love and love back <3 have a great day, dear poet xxx
