Notes About The Poem

Rum N Raisin 5 - No Need To Cook

Rum felt a chill which he couldn’t explain
Had mum left the freezer door open again?
He went to the kitchen and muttered, “Aha!”
The freezer door was just a little ajar

Inquisitive kittens, as everyone knows
Would not simply push that door shut with their nose
He just couldn’t shut it and not look inside
So Rum very soon had the door open wide

The drawer fronts were frosty so Rum couldn’t see
He called out to Raisin, “Hey, come and help me.”
Raisin dashed in, “What you raving about?”
And Rum said, “Just help me to pull this drawer out.”

Well soon they were faced with a box with some writing
They couldn’t read that but the lid was inviting
They hollered out loud to attract Ronny Rat
Who came and said, “Writing?.. Yeah, I can read that.

“This stuff is called ice cream, I eat quite a bit
But this seems to have both of your names on it
And Raisin said, “Rum, you know, I have a hunch
That this has been left for our supper… or lunch”

The lid was stuck tight so they felt a bit lost
And meanwhile the freezer began to defrost
But Ronny Rat said, “I can chew that lid off
So that you can eat it before it’s too soft.”

He nibbled and nibbled, then nibbled some more
But now the ice cream had completed its thaw
It flowed through the hole and all over the floor
The kittens had ice cream on every paw

Well Rum ran around yelling, “Ice cream for dinner.”
And Raisin said, “Lots to go round; that’s a winner.
So let’s eat the lunch that mum left for us two
I’ll bet I can eat a whole lot more than you.”

They lapped up the ice cream until it was gone
They also shared some of it with Ratty Ron
Ice cream was smeared over both kitten’s faces
And then they left footprints in all sorts of places

The freezer however was defrosting fast
It’s icy inside was a thing of the past
With squidgy hamburgers and soft chicken dippers
And then Rum asked Raisin, “Are you smelling kippers?”

Raisin was stood with ice cream coloured socks
Which may be because she was stood in the box
She said, “Yummy, kippers sound alright by me
But not for today for I’m full as can be.”

“There’s just one thing for it,” Rum said with a smile
“Why don’t we just lark about for a while?”
Raisin said, “Let’s find that mischievous mouse,
And chase him the length and the breadth of the house.”

And so with ice cream on their whiskers and toes
(Raisin had some on the tip of her nose)
They raced room to room making ‘mousey’ type calls
And ice creamy paw-prints on curtains and walls

Then back through the kitchen where soaking wet floors
Meant kipper juice sploshed upon worktops and doors
They ran up the stairs: Raisin paused and she said,
“Is that Ronny Rat, sound asleep on the bed?”

Rum yawned and said, “I think that’s enough play,
I’m feeling exhausted, let’s call it a day.”
They slept for a while but awoke with a shock
Raisin said, “Listen; a key in the lock…

“Now mummy’s home she can sit with a cuppa
For she’ll see that we've sorted out our own supper
Rum said to Raisin, “I’m still pretty stuffed.”
And Raisin said, “Me too but won’t mum be chuffed?”

Print? PRINT?… So what’s wrong with a feature length Hollywood movie? Oh hang on, no sex, no violence… hmm… maybe a Netflix mini series…. Alright, I’ll settle for a few nice comments like yours, for which I thank you ;-)

As long as I can think up new adventures, I shall keep going. I managed 10 or 11 ‘Ice cream Gran’ writes so we’ll see what we will see. Glad my kittens are still cutting the mustard. Terry

Those guys sure get up to some mischief. You have to put them in a book. Mark it suitable for children under 99. . This one again is wonderful. . Your book will encourage kids to write poetry and encourage adults to read it. You have such a talent for humor.

Thanks Speaky, I’m certainly enjoying writing them particularly as I never know how each one will end. For the benefit of our ‘I’m not reading all that lot’ friends, I’ve tried twice now to come up with a shorter write… this was meant to be one such… that went well!

Each one I write, I think I’ve exhausted my ideas and then up pops another. Rum and Raisin is my fave too, possibly sharing the podium with coffee. Thanks Tom.

Mom won’t be chuffed at all, Rum n Raisin should run on all fours. A very entertaining read Terry, loving the Rum n Raison tales… Belle
