Rude Awakening
"Doc, you awake?"
Spoken quietly through the canvas,
three little words that awake the dead.
"Yeah," I lie.
Stumble out the door.
Hand on his head,
blood meandering down his cheek
"I fell and cut my ear"
Careful exam, hanging flesh,
to clean and scrub causes pain.
Producing a flash of anger,
fist cocked, ready to strike
leaning over, I calmly utter,
"Go ahead and hit me...
I'll tear off that ear,
stuff it in you pocket.
You can mend with duct tape."
Secondhand man, "I wouldn't"
All is smooth,
sutures placed.
The day next,
"I'm sorry, too much liquor."
"T'is okay."
