Roots of Lebanon
Is thy growth deep?
Mindest thou thy roots -
Than thy boastful shoot?
Then thou must be the great one -
From the shores of Lebanon!
Is thy bark like an armour thick-
That the axe head cannot wound?
Are thy branches with love rich
With song birds -
That in thee weave a nest?
Art thy beauteous renown
Gotten from fountains deeper than men can know?
Is thy life long to tell ancient tales
To those tired ones that will be regaled under thy shade?
Hast thou with will power
Broken through rocks -
That thy branches may tower
For the earth to behold and learn from thy works?
I shall call thee then
The flourishing cedar of Lebanon.
For thee is written this poem
Whose beauty is the wise man's obsession.
