It’s fifty years since people said
Look… on the tele… Hitler
And maybe you just sat there stunned
Like something big had bit ya
There, on the keyboard, Ronald Mael
His brother, Russ, the singer
They grabbed me then, forevermore
Their song? A real humdinger
Five decades on, they're in my soul
I’m sure they’ve shaped my humour
They’re an integral part of me
No rumour and no tumour*
And do you know what’s truly mad…
Their album, just released
‘Mad!’ is its name, and there’s no shame
That number two it reached
It came to pass, they’d come anew
And these shores would be blessed
To be here for the me and you
Like THEY would be OUR guest
***
I had a ticket, bought and paid
My idols I would see
I cannot wait to see them
And I’ll travel land and sea
But what the hell; all is not well
My passage has been blocked
There is an ocean I must cross
But all my plans are rocked
For there’s a festival at large
Of which I was unknowing
The ferries that I planned to use
Are booked to overflowing
My car can’t fly and nor can I
And no one’s dug a tunnel
The ferry services are full
Both Wightlink and Red Funnel
I cannot swim the waters
Though they hold quite placid sharks
And so I’ll always rue the day
When I did not see Sparks
