River Life

Sailing on the sweet river Shannon.
Ireland's river ways central vein.
Sleeping soundly on a river barge.
Listening to the pit patting rain.

Stopping engine to eat each evening
Gazing at a flamingo pink sky.
Making many friends in local pubs.
Until it is time to say goodbye.

Rising slowly when at every lock.
Chatting happily with other folk.
Out on their daily riverside walk.
Who like to stop for a little talk.

Sure sounds like a slice of heaven on earth. My two older brothers were babies living on a houseboat back in the 1950's. We moved to the farm, house and barn, in the early 60's so I never got the pleasure. Great poem! A7

Weather permitting Robert. It's the only drawback in this country, our famous rain. Get Ireland on a good day and it really can be heaven. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

If I had not read "Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome Klapka Jerome I wouldn't have known that one could go on such an adventure. Does one hire a boat to do this? Sign on as a "sailor?" I also thought the river looked very narrow, but I assume the channel with the locks is alongside the main channel? Oh my, I'd better get googling! Liked the poem and, as you can see, it made me think! huggawhooskins! ~ j

My sister and her husband enjoyed a trip many moons ago John. If the weather was clement it would be divine. Now you have made ME think!!

Never been a riverboat queen Daniel. Had to use a bit of imagery myself for this one. Here's hoping your toes are toasty by your Xmas fire in (OMG) five days.
