Rescued
The day he came home, I thought he was saved.
As he accepted my family, I believed he was brave.
He became a member of the small circle I love.
He was clearly sent to me from someone above.
At age three, he already lived a hard life.
Our new beginning, showed a future so bright.
When Sam chose us at the shelter that day,
I believed we could show him love the right way.
I wanted to teach him all the wonderful things.
Like what unconditional love and patience can bring.
They called Sam a "Rescue" in need of our help.
His compassion and character made my heart melt.
So that day at the shelter, did we rescue Sam?
Because it seems I was rescued and know how blessed I am.
Now our time is over, it's time to let go.
After 13 years together, it's out of love he must know.
So reluctantly I send him back to whom sent him to me.
Knowing I'll see him again, hoping he'll remember me.
Comforted now only; by the knowledge he's free.
