Refuge

The rain began to fall without warning
It crashed down from the sky
As if the gods were mourning
One of their own gone to die

How did he miss these changing skies?
Through deafened ears and blinded eyes?

He forgave his senses,
He cursed his fear
He knew he’d felt the clouds a near

A creature born of some twisted marriage
He had a frail and weakened carriage
The deluge forced a need for shelter
To escape the damning helter skelter

He sought this refuge in her bed
A robe to hide his shameful head
He flew there on stolen feathered wings
His fevered mind on softer things

Anon, he’s caused to pause and ponder
His tortured mind and soul do wonder
What is this thought that touches him
And makes his wants now seem so grim?
