Reading Material

My husband reads biographies But I’ll take fiction, if you please. He likes to learn about the past; His tomes would bore me, really fast. Yet having finished my last book, I figured I would take a look At one of his, a bio on My second favorite Beatle, John. It’s written by his former wife From his pre-Yoko English life With photos of their early years – Quite happy, or so it appears. I haven’t gotten far enough To read about the juicy stuff Though there are hints that when John left, His wife and son were both bereft. Of all my husband’s books there are This is the fluffiest, by far. Of course, that is the reason why I’d thought I’d give it just one try. So far so good, but when I’m done, Re-reading time will have begun. From novels I’ve read long ago, I’ll dive in for a second show.

Crazy as it always seems, in times we have no choice. There's always something positive that we can give a voice. You've broadened your horizon beyond what's fantasy. And delved into reality to see what you could see.

made me smile Ilene I prefer biographies as does my mum. we get them as 'talking books' as she has limited sight. my hubby (and I) help in the library for manx blind welfare and its frustrating we can't do our job of dealing with the new books and the librarians send them out but its all stopped for now and I worry for those who don't have access to them any more:-( hugs Jan xx

I'm with your husband on biographies, though when in college my favorite writer was Thomas Mann. I have two biographies on Einstein in my library, and two on Emily Dickinson. One on Mozart, Wagner, and Rilke. Despite their individual genius, they were all very human like the rest of us. / M

I stopped reading fiction after reading Little Lord Fauntleroy, as required by school. To date, I am the only person I know who has read Will Durant's, "Story of Civilisation" which I have never hesitated to recommend over "holy" scriptures. History is ever so more fascinating than any novel could be! Aloha! Rico

I love biographies and especially autobiographies. My favorite was by Carol Burnett. Maybe this will open up new horizons! A great poem.

I'm on your side, Ilene....I'll take fiction any day over biography, but I must admit to having a greater tolerance for biography than you seem to have and I do occasionally find one I can tolerate and/or even enjoy. One such is a relatively dated biography of Hemingway from about 1966 called "Papa Hemingway" by A. E. Hotchner. It is detailed, personal, and gives a deep look into his life and times. Good work on your poem!

I enjoyed your poem, Ilene. I side with Mel however - I think the last book of fiction I read was Tom Sawyer as a kid! I love American history, Civil War, WW11, biographies etc. Last week I got out my 8th grade literature book and even read the material in it. A good time to catch up on our reading I guess. Glad you enjoyed Cletus O'toole's conflict with the bidet. Seems he was born under a dark cloud. Stay safe - Bob
