Purple People

If people were purple and the sky were not blue If flowers were fountains and houses were, too If the grass were not greener across that darn fence, And apples were sold at a pound per six pence If rainbows would melt down and stain all the streets, And slippers were slippery and chores were like treats, If puppies stayed puppies and kittens were free If people were purple and I could stay me If people were purple and the sky were not blue If gold were not heavy and cows got the flu If cats ate my crackers and Polly liked chess, And marmalade stains were allowed on my dress, If tides went to school and boats walked on legs, And nets caught up children and hung them on pegs, If hearts were like lockets and I had the key, If people were purple and I could stay me If people were purple and the sky were not blue, If happy were happy and sticky like glue, If smiles were like darts, all pointy and thin, And truth could be pulled on over your skin, If we could catch wishes and keep them in jars, And the sun didn't try to hide all the stars, If blue birds were curtains when I went to tea, If people were purple and I could stay me.
