Pronouns Go Wild

he we they thee she
pronouns used lavishly
I understand why we’re not limited to two
But when so many want a new one, what do we do?

That's a good question. I know I'm old-fashioned, but I'm ignoring the whole thing. I just use the regular old pronouns and let the chips from where 'em may. (chuckling) I wrote this before reading Ilene comment. Like minds, you know....

I don't know how her teacher would keep it straight. I couldn't. I'd be coming up with a totally genderless pronoun to use for everyone like, "UM?"

I have a group of four fifth grade girls. One told me she has changed her name, she wants to be HE now. Another also changed her name. She wants to be THEY. I rolled my eyes silently up into my head. Their teachers are totally on board which seems like the weirdest part to me.

i agree, caren, but as a former (and forever!) english teacher, i much prefer coming up with some new ones (i've seen things like "em" mentioned) rather than using "they," which, since it's supposed to be plural, is very confusing when used to describe one person. guess i'm just old-fashioned...

I guess they means "I am both male and female and maybe a bit cat"?
