Pondering the Pavement

                                                         Pondering the Pavement

The pavement stretches far and wide
As I stroll through the city`s side,
Often cracks so deep, greet my eye,
Cracks, where soft secret shadows lie.

As along the pavement I tread
Some strange thoughts flare up in my head,
So old are the stones in this town,
One would wish to eye with a frown.

The stones turn warm with summer shine
In this town of an ancient time,
Each crack has a story to tell
On the fate that on some men fell.

The pavement has witnessed the fall
Of empires, once so strong and tall
The plummeting of kings and queens
                                                  Once powerful on local scenes.

It`s the sleeping ground of paupers
In search for a dime or copper,
The breeding ground of some talents
Or their collapse in a moment.

                                                    Often hurried feet rush along
Carving a path amidst the throng
                                                   Some vital meetings to attend
Or to meet some important friend

A hard pavement with a strong base,
                                                   In this convulsive, frantic place.
It spreads an aura, ever near,
Dispelling clouds of doubts and fear.

The pavement holds the city's grime,
                                                       The residue of passing time,
A gritty texture, rough and worn,
                                                           A silent story, newly born.

The scent of exhaust fills the cracks
Of the pavement, turning them black
As cars rush along with a blare,
                                                        To passers-by often a scare.

And yet, despite its blackened face,
It offers comfort, time and space
To pause and think, to contemplate
The winding paths of love and hate.

As I stroll and as I ponder
Tales of the pavement, I wonder
On plain truths the pavement offers
That in future one may refer.
