Poetry Surrounds Us Everywhere

The gift of poetry is an amazing thing
you live so many years not recognising it
even at school, it doesn't really click
so much in your mind except words don't fit

We just need to open our eyes
poetry is clearly all around
in the sky on the hills everywhere
so clear just look it's to be found

But there then is a real problem
transferring it from sight to the page
for then a block occurs on the paper
it seems locked inside your cage

We need to find the hidden key
grasping for it up among the cloud
wait for the blue sky to come
then the inner voice speaks so loud

What a picture this conveys
encapturing your every thought
just ponder upon this in a moment
learn well to be fully taught!

('Poetry surrounds us everywhere, but putting it on paper is,
alas, not so easy as looking at it.')
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Thanks Judith, Glad you enjoyed it and I loved your line 'The world is our sketch pad' for indeed it is so vast and so wide! Hope you're having a lovely day, it's into the late evening over here and rather wet. Blessings, Gordon

Hello Gordon … I personally find the first line being a challenge, however, in saying that, writing poetry tends to have you observing your surroundings in different circumstances, so therefore as your poem states, there is a poem in everything - thank you Gordon - Lindsay

I have never really experienced writers block and for that I am very thankful to the good lord. He helps me 24/7. Plus with my motley crew I always have things to write about. Lol. I really enjoyed your poem.

Your well described experience rings a bell with me, although it took me 77 years before I began writing poetry.

Hi Gordon, I think Poetry is a way of life with me - I have been writing since I was 15 years old but I had breaks in between looooooong breaks like maybe 5 years and then I would catch up frantically and then maybe another year and so on. Poetry soup is the first web site I have ever joined and love it and my fellow poets to bits! I love your poem, well done Gordon. Poetry wishes, Jennifer.

Thanks Jennifer, Glad you loved my piece and you've been on a while but thinking about it I've been writing for about the same time off and on though mostly on another site having only been here on PS for the last 6 or so years. Have a blessed weekend, Gordon
