Pleasure

Why oh why
      Everything that brings great pleasure
      Causes disaster, makes one cry
Momentary delight, long term pain beyond measure

      Sugar, alcohol, gambling, cocaine, tobacco
Universe has a wicked sense of humor
What are we to learn ? We reap what we sow ?
Remove that addiction like a tumor

      Life's joy we seek
      Relationships, life goal
      From top of mountain peak
      I rest my soul

bruce, I feel your pain. MY biggest addiction that is harmful for me is my love of food. I struggle every day of my life not to overeat because my appetite is never satisfied. (I found out this is genetic. I don't have the genetic marker for what makes people feel full when they have actually had all they need). I could probably eat all day long at a slow pace and feel great but I would become fat. I especially love the way you ended this poem. I want HOPE for you, bruce. You can beat addictions
