Plan B
We were just a couple of kids, weren’t we, you and I?
We thought we had our joined lives all figured out.
We would find a quaint cottage for our first home (sigh).
We would start a family, with each boy an Eagle Scout.
But in five decades united, it didn’t work that way.
Money woes, insufficient clothes, marital stress arose.
Life wasn’t what we envisioned; we had feet of clay.
Plans we made ages ago weren’t what living disclosed.
Still we’re certain the trials and joys we have known
Were superior to any plan two kids could devise.
They have tempered us in ways we had to be shown
Thus we have learned, grown, and opened our eyes.
