PHOTO
Real shining bravery, without any woes
Pictures and medals in dust covered glass
Junk shop shelves filled with mementos,
Faded yellow paper, dull unpolished brass.
But it strikes me as most pitiful
The photo of this young man in brown
Where the only thing beautiful
Is the girl by his side looking down
And was she grateful to him
For sacrificing his life in mud
And shading her future inhumanly dim
By leaving instead of staying as he should
Perhaps she never wanted another to wed
Waited for years for news of his life
Never knew a strong arm round her in bed
Nor the want to be anothers wife
As he stood in the mud with his shell casing
Did he know how much she missed his smile
The only one to set her heart racing
The one who said just wait a while
Your country honours your sacrifice
Your comrades remember your valour
The photo is on sale at a low price
Due to its old deathly pallour
