Notes About The Poem

That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:2-3

Philosopher's Brawl

We journey through mystery’s dimly lit hall
Where questions arise and philosopher's brawl
The compass of faith guiding each step we take
Across valleys of doubt, through rivers opaque
Yet each answer discovered, each secret unfurled
Is handed in whispers from a Wisdom above this world
Presuppositions buried deep in the mind’s fertile ground
Watered by Scripture, the growth is profound
Truth does not tremble at reason’s demand
Instead, faith is the lantern we clutch in our hand
In the dusk of confusion, we search for the dawn
Trusting His guidance His logic is strong
Augustine’s refrain echoes soft through the years
“We believe to understand,” dissolving our fears
Reason resting on the shoulders of faith
Reason feeding the other, faith opens the gate
We lean not on ourselves but acknowledge His ways
Finding knowledge anew in the Ancient of Days
So let us not falter nor stumble nor stray
For the journey of faith is not linear gray
It curves with each prayer and bends with each plea
As the Lord of all wisdom draws near to thee
From the Spirit’s soft whisper and wandering eye
From the Garden’s old tree to Mount Sinai
The pattern is woven from Eden to now
Faith and reason in concert, before Him we bow
Our steps may be weary, our vision unclear
But the Word is our anchor, the hope to see clear
Right reason is one reason we can enter the deep
Of mysteries hidden, but not to the sheep
As the beginning of knowledge, reverence and awe
We stand on the promise, the truth of God’s law
May the faith that we have direct a reasoning heart
The intellectual fraction is where we start
For He leads us onward, through darkness and light
Unveiling the secrets that banish the night
Reason and faith, let them dance, faith will lead
Guided by The Spirit Who you’ll never impede
