Penguins and I

To fly eventually -
to be at one with birds.
A childhood dream at three
that I pretend I had.

I would fly,
if dream came true
with penguins
that must surely dream?

(I saw a penguin yesterday
and it stretched its wings for me
as if one day
it will...)

They and I will fly above
this sullied earth
of sore pretense
of better things.

And even if we don't,
I gain for having pretended in this poem
a childhood dream I never had -
to be part of penguin lore.
