Pearls of Wisdom

Sage men and women the world around,
many pearls of wisdom they have found
(I guess I'm not so smart). 
"Love Jane, not Mary or Marie.
Have faith in God to comfort thee. 
Learn forgiveness, your heart to free. 
Take as your friend, your enemy."
Am I a "piece of work" or art?
I cannot change my heart.

A thoughtfully candid poem that balances traditional, proverb-like rhyme with a refreshingly vulnerable final turn. The repeated counsel has a gentle, almost hymn-like cadence, while “Am I a ‘piece of work’ or art?” gives the piece its memorable emotional core—questioning, human, and quietly profound. I just changed the title of the older poem, so I don't have two "Wise Men Say"s. I guess I like that title. Must be because I like that Elvis song.

Haha, this sent me into the twilight zone for a few minutes. This is not the poem that won the contest. It's a poem I forgot about that I wrote back in 2025. I wrote another poem with exactly the same title for the contest: Wise Men Say. I pinned that poem.
