Peace and Quiet
Peace and quiet?
Solitude is all I seek,
Time to think, no need to speak;
Empty words that mean so little
Slack-jawed, now I dribble spittle,
Silence rules, my mind just screams,
Lost in a maze of broken dreams,
While the past is past, or so it seems.
Shades of black, shades of white,
Shades of grey, shades of night.
So is it just the way life falls?
Oblivious to frantic calls;
Love, a word so short and shallow
Lies in a mind unkempt and fallow
Life in darkness, life in shame,
Life, just something in a game,
No thoughts, no feelings, just a name.
Ghosts in black, shades of white,
Shades of grey invade my sight,
So far to go when so far back,
Mind a frenzy, jaw still slack,
Time moves on so slowly now
And so I sit and wonder 'How'?
How to close those open doors
That harbour wet malignant sores
On this and other distant shores.
Ghosts in black, Ghosts in white,
Shades of grey that claw and bite.
Time is short and so I rise
To see the world through jaundiced eyes,
The present draped in knotted lace,
The future stares me in the face.
Reality now holds my hand
As if alone I cannot stand
Or walk unaided 'cross the sand.
Ghosts in black,
Ghosts in white,
Ghosts in grey
Who own the night.
