Past Is Passed

We live for the moment,
that much is surely true,
the years and decades
quickly fading from view.

Look behind you
if you must and I trust
you'll only see
what you remember,
not what happened,
which is essentially
the difference
between the past
and history.

Past sins and successes,
whether noble deeds or wretched excesses,
are no more our ticket to heaven,
than the vapor trail
left by a 747.

What's in our hearts,
is what's measured for our fate,
when, and if we arrive
one day at the 'gate'.

Your past and my past,
are now,
truly passed,
so the only question
that remains to be asked,
is will the future
be our past,
some day
at last?
