Passing Parade

I sit in wide-eyed wonder
as people come and go.
Some arrive as if to ponder
the folks in a freak show.

As they tell their stories of trials
before thay begin sobriety,
of the many meandering miles
traveled in drunken misery.

then, they don't stay in A.A.
They disappear from view.
Some last no more than a day,
some linger for quite a few

before they too relapse
back to the world of the drunk,
then return in a frightful collapse
once more on the tables to thump.

Others sit for years
and watch the passing parade
to marvel at who reappears
as if from a watery grave.

As they come and they go
I sit in wide-eyed Grace,
almost thirty years in a row,
grateful to know my place.
