Parents
Our children make us proud
often to the point of silliness
we are in awe
and somewhat amazed
at what they have achieved
at whom they have become
but knew all along
that they were special
and when we look at them
we wonder
with delight and a little sadness
at what point did they don their independence
having earned their place in the world
their right to an opinion
when casting back to find that moment
to pin it down
we realise that it wasn’t a specific point in time
nor was it sign-posted by a single event
it was a process
a journey that we took together
a journey of mutual discovery and enrichment
a journey filled with gratitude, joy and fulfilment
a journey tempered with difficulty, pain and heart-ache
a journey that taught us to unconditionally forgive
and bestowed upon us
the uplifting humility of being forgiven
a journey that allowed the true meaning of love
to become lodged within us
it seems to have taken an age
but happened in a heart-beat
and when we look upon this wondrous gift
this gift that transformed us into parents
we realise one of life’s beautiful truths
our children are conceived by us
but we are shaped and made better by them.
