Parable of the Talents

Some people are convinced that they possess
Accomplishment within a certain art,
Yet sound, impartial judgement would conclude
That they have little talent to impart.

In contrast there are those with aptitude
Who never share the gifts which could inspire,
Reluctant to expend their time and skills
In quickening a kindred spirit’s fire.

Each person is endowed with unique gifts
To be applied, not to be hid from sight
Nor quenched by the mundanity of life
But rather to encourage and delight.

No gift should lie unsealed upon life’s shelf
True talent must be nurtured and unfurled
Enhancing lives which then reciprocate;
Creating an enlightened, vibrant world.

Wendy, Wendy....First 4 lines courageous of you to say, but so true, as the entire poem.Beautiful, as are your comments to fellow winners. So enjoyable. I think I got too factual , and too long in my Talent poem. You winners have lots to teach new writers. Again congrats. Will visit your site.

What a lovely comment, Barbara. We all deceive ourselves in different areas but often miss the hidden gifts we do possess. Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment.

Thank you so much Line. We should all know our limits( one of mine being free verse!!) and our strengths and remember how fleeting this life on earth is. I loved the versions which kept strictly to the biblical version though.

Wendy, I couldn't agree more. The effort it takes to use and share our talents comes back with interest paid. Congratulations! You deserve this recognition! Regards, Dean

Thank you so much although I think that Holly may have preferred a more literal interpretation.
