Pancakes With Syrup
PANCAKES WITH SYRUP
Apparition of the past
Tending to the future
Future is soaked
Soaked with sorrow
Sorrow tastes blood
Blood of wrathful grapes
Grapes plucked one by
One, tightly squeezed
Squeezed with dry palms
Palms rest on Jerusalem streets
Streets filled with throngs
Throngs of people, restless
Restless for peace, and war
War painted on their feet
Feet that fight the pavement
Pavement pulls them like taffy
Taffy stretches — distorts
Distorts like a funhouse mirror
Mirror of mockery and mayhem
Mayhem stirs the pot
Pot that boils over
Over the top
Top bureau filled with papers
Papers burning in protest
Protest of life itself
Itself a mirror, a bullseye
Bullseye of the author
Author of one’s own making
Making pancakes with syrup
Syrup sweetens the lie
Past lies churn future consequences
