Outside the Fold
By Laura Dee Battle
December 18, 2014
On days like these
I cannot breathe
Can't find a release
Can't you see what I perceive?
Don't need to give a reason why
Don't need to justify my lies
If you mistake me for a guy
Just squeeze my throat until I die
Why can't you throw it away?
I'm not the same as yesterday
A slave today the words I say
Reminding me, the price I pay
So swallow me my fallen pride
Fleeting as the changing tides
Don't need a dress to be the bride
Won't be a Barbie for this ride
Is that the price to pay for this?
Misgendered till my dying day
Your ignorance is not my bliss
I live inside these thoughts today
Maybe it's greed or loneliness
That makes this hurt more than it should
It won't be cured just by a kiss
Still, echoes sting more than you could
I live outside the world you know
I'll never shine; I'll never blend
Still I won't fill the status quo
But neither will my fallen friends
