Out Running Death
I knew I heard that sound before,
but this time Death was knocking on my front door
Three loud taps woke me from my sleep
My time was over, for there was a contract I had to keep
I sat up quietly and didn’t stir
Hoping he would leave thinking I wasn’t there
He knocked once more with all his might
I looked at the clock, it was half past midnight
“I know you're in there”, Death continued to pound,
he peeped in my window, but I didn’t make a sound
Then I beseeched him for just one more day
To let my loved ones, know that I was going away.
Death scoffed and refused my request
He was on a tight schedule and there wasn’t much time left
Lacking sympathy for he heard it all before.
So, I disregarded his rebuff and fled through the back door
I jumped in my car and made a quick dash
My decision was hasty, risky and brash
Death tried to follow but much to his ire,
quickly relieving I had flattened his rear tire.
I heard Death threats stating “there wasn’t much time to spare “
Determined to catch me he frantically called a Ride share
First, I drove to the home of my old best friend
Regretfully telling her I would never see her again
I wept with my sister and then held tightly to my son
And whispered softly that my time on earth was done
I cried to the universe, imploring I had one more stop to make
Before the remainder of my life, death would take.
But Death wasn’t giving up easily and was close on my heels
As I heard the shrieking of the Uber’s drivers front wheels
Angry and upset his screams resounded through the air
the clock was ticking as the frightened driver recognized his fare
I sped down the highway out running my demise
Only to see the pain in my lover’s sad eyes.
Eventually Death caught up to me and impatiently let me know
My time was over do, expired several hours ago.
I wasn’t ready to cross over I had so much more to do
But Death assured me this was final, my life was definitely through
“Face the fact your epoch has reached its end
there are no more excuses, there will be no more time to lend”.
So, I prayed to God for forgiveness and asked for heavens charms
while Death engulfed me, gravely wrapping me up in his dark arms.
