Notes About The Poem

Kent Poole, born December 1963, played Merle Webb #12 in the famous basketball movies "Hoosiers" in 1986 with actor, Gene Hackman, and actress Barbara Hershey. After a messy breakup, his wife took their three kids that left him in a state of depression. He committed suicide by hanging on September 2003, at the age of 39. Fellow actor, Brad Long who played Buddy Walker #14, had a son who wrote about depression refrencing Kent's struggle that he had titled after his famous line in the movie, "Let's Win for the Little Towns."

Out of Bounds

Swadling encrypt the contrarious slopes of a mired
entity coursed veinous stammer spurts bled 
across a court of an unchallenged befitted named
as valor cornered the bleached to be razed 
spirits encapsulate the branded sole championed 
glory dazed betwixt ears of an abandoned
waning light fills purple sighs 'ill eve succumbed
bitterness spilt the downtrodden weighed
hung kicked a life out of bound the final scored

Tragedy triggers contemplation by the vulnerable. Potentials should be enthused to seek further help if the outlined have a measure of semblance.

This poem reads like an abstract battlefield chant, thick with sorrow, defiance, and tragedy. Its power lies in its density and archaic diction, but its challenge lies there too—it risks leaving the reader adrift.

The infused themes strengthen its imagery with layers of meaning, albeit, the complexity invites readers to engage more deeply, presenting an opportunity for them to explore and connect with the text on a more profound level, while navigating the challenging subject of suicide with greater awareness and understanding.
