Author's Notes: "Our Human Nature" is a Rhymed Couplet I originally finished on January 5, 2016. In this particular write, I delved head-first into the challenging realm of "Human Nature." What I attempted to do in this write was to draw a compare and contrast of certain circumstances or situations in each couplet under the thematic rubric of Human Nature. Just remember as you read each of the seven couplets in this rhymed write, think of the notion of where you have some idea or truism that can be reflective of the "Yin-Yang" concept in Chinese philosophy. (That is, the "Yin-Yang" philosophy describes how contrary or opposite forces in our natural world are actually interconnected and complementary. This duality of forces is part of the natural balance and symmetry of life -- or so says this particular philosophic concept!) Now that I've attempted to wax philosophically on the synchronized dynamic tension and result of this poem -- all I can say is, "read and enjoy the verses!" This poem constitutes one of my many takes on the elusive concept we're all familiar with and know as "Human Nature." I bid you all "Good Luck." (Gary Bateman - April 18, 2016) (Rhymed Couplet)

Our Human Nature A real aspect always part of a person’s life; One that can bear fangs and pangs of strife. A living barometer replete with its choices; Leaving each of us puzzled, full of voices. It prays on our very emotions and naiveté, Leaving us at times in moments of disarray. Man by his nature is fickle and imperfect. God by His nature is divine and perfect. A person’s decency is so wonderful to tell; Another’s depravity is so worthy of Hell! A person’s good deeds mark now his true measure, Bringing him God’s divine love always to treasure! Never trust what you can’t feel deep in your heart; This makes us divine in God’s eyes—sets us apart! Gary Bateman, Copyright © All Rights Reserved (January 5, 2016) (Rhymed Couplet)

I enjoyed these meaningful couplets, Gary. You also manage to reach your aim in showing duality of forces. As usual, your notes prior to reading the poem, prepare the reader to look out for the main and important points. ~ All the best....paul

Thanks so much here Paul for your very kind words!! The Author's Notes add another layer of work in preparation of my poetry later to post, but, in the end, they are totally worth the effort. (They serve as my master audit trail concerning my thoughts at the time I've posted the new poem.) Cheers and Best, Gary

Goog Morgen mein freund, Gary! Wie gets du? It is really a pleasure to visit you and read your profound poem! Greek Mythology tells us that when Zeus decided to create the world he changed himself to god Eros so as to unite the opposites that were in strife so he brought harmony! Excellent poem. I have written something on the same lines, some time ago: Nothing In Excess. A seven my friend!

Thanks so much Demetrios!! Thanks for the 7!! I like your story about Zeus here. It's so great to hear from you my good friend!! (Although I'm now back with Poetry Soup, I'm also working too with my prose writes which is the reason I was away for a while.) I'll see if I can access "Nothing in Excess." Your poetry is always a treat to read!! Did you finally get your book published?? I believe the last time we communicated before I took my sabbatical from Poetry Soup, you were waiting for it to be released from the publisher. (My second book: A Novella, short stories, and micro-fiction writes should be ready by next year for publication.) A third book of poetry (only) will follow. Cheers and Best, Gary

WELCOME BACK MY FRIEND. In our lives good battles evil every moment of every day. Neither one takes a break even in our sleep they battle--and we are the battleground my friend. Best we learn that we have the deciding vote in which one wins! Run to the light and evil loses every time as is revealed aptly in your closing couplet.. A7

Hello Robert, and best greetings!! I certainly identify with and fully agree with your commentary above. Your words are most certainly spot-on!! I always enjoy the couplet writes, especially when set to rhyme (and sometimes to iambic pentameter when they are "Heroic" by nomenclature). I always try to keep my couplet writes to seven couplets (or 14 verses) similar to the structure of the Shakespearean sonnet. And you're right, when we "run to the light . . . evil loses every time." Cheers and Best, Gary

Hi Gary, well you have succeeded in doing what you wished to do with this write. Each couplet shines in its poetic light and is part of one excellent whole. You have created the yin-yan you wished to create. When the words sing as these do you are certainly on a winner Gary. A most creative write that does flow well. Each couplet fits in so easily with the next. Welcome back my Friend. Hoping Ingrid and yourself are well. My best wishes to you both. This is a 7 and goes into my faves Gary..Mike.
