Our Betters
. for public domain
They turned his bird bath bowls upside down,
when gyrovague Bill left Valley Town
to wander North way to catch his wind,
to refresh his soul, and serve those sinned
on by their betters, no parting letters.
His leaving brought on smiles and frowns,
and one less person to nurse the grounds
of Saint Martin Place, serene and gated,
to house the poor, which, thus consecrated
by church betters, eased their mundane fetters.
The birds will drink from another shallow,
for God provides what he deems Hallow,
and Bill will raise more bowls for thirsty birds
who do not drink from wells of Holy Words;
and elder betters, shall care for Love's debtors.
Gyrovagues were wandering or itinerant monks without fixed residence or leadership, who relied on charity and the hospitality of others. Wikipedia
