Oscar Not For This Speech
OSCAR? NOT FOR THIS SPEECH
An Award such as this
Brings such joy to me.
Cannot believe I am standing here,
During an Oscar ceremony.
Every year I watch in awe
From my home in Hollywood,
Green with envy of those who have won,
Hoping that one year I shall come good.
I wrote a speech many years ago,
Just in case I should win one year.
Knowing exactly what I would say;
Listing the people who got me here.
Mother and father for having me.
Not forgetting that teacher at school
Or the am-dram theatre director
Prepared to let me play the fool.
Quietly modest or let it all out?
Ready to bask in the spotlight’s glow?
Surely this won’t happen again.
Tissues ready, let the tears flow.
Up here at last, I am lost for words.
Very unlike me I hear you say.
Wish I could find that speech I once wrote.
X marks the spot where they told me to stay.
Yet here, on that spot, the audience waiting,
Zero’s the mark I shall get for orating.
