My first deliberate attempt at a song (The River Styx was accidental). For my fellow poets, the technical differences from my usual stuff are a doubling of unstressed syllables (typical of songs) and a looser meter. But I couldn't give up on the rhyme.
You ask if I love you, darling, you ask if I could;
It strikes to the core, my darling, my words haven't stood.
Know that I love you, darling, know that I should;
But my words cannot carry, darling, look under the hood.
Open my heart now, darling, see what's inside;
Yes, open my heart, my darling, it flows to your tide.
Long was I lost, my darling, on a sea without love;
Long was I lost, my darling, you raised me above.
Long on a midnight journey, gone was the sun;
Long on a wayward passage, long on the run.
Sunlight you brought me, darling, sunlight and peace;
Guarding my soul, my darling, you made the pain cease.
Open my heart now, darling, see what's inside;
Yes, open my heart, my darling, it flows to your tide.
Long was I lost, my darling, on a sea without love;
Long was I lost, my darling, you raised me above.
Mingle our lives now, darling, two to a one;
Break all the shadows, darling, bring on the sun.
Rake up the leaves now, darling, the scatter of life;
Make all your plans now, darling, to live as my wife.
Open my heart now, darling, see what's inside;
Yes, open my heart, my darling, it flows to your tide.
Long was I lost, my darling, on a sea without love;
Long was I lost, my darling, you raised me above.
