Onset

Beginning's latent hope reminds,
that wisdom leaves a track behind
to walk upon, and realize
its innocence from truth's revive.

And I, to love you, do surmise
that loving, at the onset, tries
to bring some goal to recognize -
not fated, but complete and wise.

Love's wakening is altered, pried,
until truth's force is emphasized.
Now earthly, then to Godly size,
to hold and treasure, not comply.

This holding, from some outside eye
does tend to steal love's gift, as thy
do tend to nourish feeling's lie.
Oh God, this upset, show me why -

Love's onset goes astray, and I
do pray with fervor, and deny
that our receiving could but die
without true grace to rectify.

God as the giver, teach apply
that prayer and faith on Him rely!
