ONLY WORDS
Should poetic works be for general consumption
Is superficial readership the goal, and if so, why
Or aimed at those who as specialists, self-identify
Perhaps have in mind, those with some gumption
With words flowing well, it still takes some time
When following a pattern that’s hard to construct
In most verses, metaphors can be cleverly tucked
Most will accept the impact of meter and rhyme
Should it provide insight or just a pleasant sound
Words can describe the everyday or even fantasy
Or the beauty of nature when taking time to see
Yet success is when a meeting of minds is found
There are those who think in just two dimensions
And words at one level, can offer entertainment
But with a deeper resonance, makes a statement
When understood, can realise a poet’s intentions
When conjuring some vivid description of a scene
Magic can sometimes offer more than just reality
Looking behind the obvious, can focus on duality
What it can be, now is, or in the past, has been
