Only If I Were
If I were a bird
every feather would be preened and light,
singing sweet tweeted songs to my delight,
I'd take to the trees silent and unheard
flit and flutter to my heart in midday light,
free as any bird
floating caw-less
lightweight, airy and cautious,
eyeing the earth below as flawless;
I'd sail the sky, touch the clouds,
a sparrow or bluejay, no something greater, more proud,
not an eagle or a falcon or some bird of prey across the seas and bay
but a gull, a seagull, white and gray,
flying out to sea
casting an eye on oceans beneath me;
alas, it is but a dream
sadly I screech the seagull screams
and back to the parking lots for bread and french fries
where i barely hear the ocean waves cry.
