Only After It's Over

Why is it
That when the story ends
We begin to feel it all?
That only after we read the last line
Our hearts start to ache, we finally understand why

She said what she said and why he cried
Why they smiled at the end when they found out he died
Why the sky was pitch black in the middle of the day
Why leaves were falling in the middle of May.

For when it is all finished,
You'll realise it was something more, other than the dismay.
