One More Step
<“One more step, one more step,
You’re almost home.”
I tell myself
As I walk back alone
“One more step, one more step,
You can make it.”
The people I meet outside
Tell me how it’s unfit
“One more step, one more step
And you’ll be safe.”
It grows darker every minute
I have no time to waste
“One more step, one more step,
Close your eyes.”
Don’t respond,
Ignore those boys
“One more step, one more step,
It’s going to be fine”
I glance at my watch
It’s only half past nine
“One more step, one more step
Don’t give in.”
Fear takes over me.
My deep breaths begin
“One more step, one last step,
And look! You’re alright.”
But the joy fades as I realize
It’s been the same every night
