One More Day

For just one day, a glory, a surprise!
No talk of things that made no sense,
No utterance that made me tense,
Fervent life returned to those demented eyes!

My gran was here perhaps to stay?
To sing with me, the joy she was,
My heart was full of hope and love because,
Gran was here perhaps for one more day!

Confused, beguiled, her daily state at best,
A year just past, her mind was so much more,
She lived for long, as a boy of that I'm sure,
I wonder when she’ll finally come to rest?

Remorse, regret, my daily state at best,
A day just past, I failed to pay my due,
I looked at her; she hadn't got a clue,
For my betrayal, will I ever come to rest?

But for this day, all is well and good,
My lovely gran, I'm sure she understood.

It is sad when your loved ones don't know who you are anymore. A beautiful tribute. You have to have great love and respect to visit someone who looks like the person you love, but who is not the same inside anymore. A very moving poem.
